TANGENT SUNSET

COMMON CREEPS by Alex Cosper

What's your comment on New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's resignation after the NY Times reported he got caught by the Feds for paying a prostitute? (3/12/08)

respondent quote
MADAM OF THE PLANETS: I had no idea this could happen to Spitzer. He was considered Presidential material at one point. He could have been Earth's Representative on World Contact Day. His quest to destroy evil will long be remembered. The fact that evil destroyed him will be regarded as a normal consequence of the universe.
JENNIFER: That's too bad he cheated on his wife. That's about as far as my grief goes. It's really a personal matter. It had nothing to do with his ability to run the state of New York. I'm sure the hooker who got paid $5000 didn't file any complaints.
REAGAN DEMOCRAT: I think this is a good first step, that the feds and the public pressured Spitzer to resign. The next step would be criminal charges. Spitzer violated the Mann Act because he apparently became involved with interstate prostitution. That's a felony and I think a little jail time would resolve this issue. That's what he gets for bringing down corrupt corporate leaders. Hey, you don't mess with Corporate America.
COOL LEE: I've never even heard of Spitzer before this scandal. And when I saw his name Eliot was spelled with one L, I just thought it looked funny on paper like some kind of typo. I thought to myself if they want to talk about a scandal, can't they come up with someone with a better name? And on top of that, the guy looks too middle-aged. It wasn't Hollywood enough.
UNKNOWN SKEPTIC: One of the last great leaders in reform has been taken down, but I guess it could have been expected. Spitzer came down so hard on the corrupt record industry for payola violations, I wouldn't be surprised if they set him up with one of their hookers.
BROKER BOB: Wall Street loved the news. Company leaders were cracking champagne. I was as well because we all thought the market was going to stairstep up after yesterday's rally. Unfortunately, the Spitzer resignation did not rally the market today. I guess we have to look at yesterday's fed announcement of bailing out banks as an indication that the feds are better market movers than state employees.
SINGER BOY GIRL: I've grown bored with political scandals. It's all becoming too heterosexual for me. Now the guy that was found in the airport bathroom with others guys...that was a good story.
COLLEGE STUDENT: When you're in public office you have to watch yourself a little better. You have to be aware that everything you do is on record. You don't set yourself up with text messaging and phone calls that might incriminate you. I had admired the guy, but to go out like this is devastating. Even so, if people like Oliver North, G. Gordon Liddy and Karl Rove can get jobs with television networks, I'm sure there's room for one more.
