TANGENT SUNSET

COMMON CREEPS by Alex Cosper

How do you feel about CBS suing Howard Stern for breach of contract? (3/2/06)

respondent quote
UNKNOWN SKEPTIC: I don't think the breach of contract claim will stick since CBS obviously let Howard promote his move to Sirius while he was working for CBS at the time. They even let Howard make appearances on CBS-TV promoting the move on shows like David Letterman and 60 Minutes.
CANDY: I'm from the religious right and I'm completely against shock jocks like Howard Stern. His show is obscene and there should be a Constitutional Amendment banning that type of free speech. I never thought I'd be saying this after how CBS tried to bash Reagan during the Bush re-election campaign, but go CBS!
DJ YOYO JO-Z: I don't know much about Howard Stern other than he's a popular radio guy who is only heard on white stations that don't play hip hop.
MR. BIG BIZ: Oh, I'd have to say Les Moonves at CBS has a legitimate complaint. A contract is a contract, and if you breach it, you should be held accountable, particularly since it involves revenue loss. Stern will need a strong defense, although judging by how many of my own employees I've successfully sued over the years, I'd have to say it's a slam dunk for CBS.
LEFT GUARD LARRY: Yo Howard. Bust some ass, buddy. Don't back down. I love your slammin' talk on TV about how you put in 20 years for the company and made them guys rich. Obviously Howard is irreplaceable unless you count the fools they replaced him with - even though they melted down the whole audience to nothing after Howard left - almost overnight.
BROKER BOB: I'm not going to be making any comments on CBS or Sirius stock. It's this kind of news that creates panic in the market, which is great for the hedge fund industry - but it makes me look like a sudden jack ass to all my clients.
COLLEGE STUDENT: The way they just let Stern say whatever he wanted, and the way Mel Karmazin moved from Howard's old boss to Howard's new boss, almost made me think at the time that CBS was gonna buy out Sirius - almost the same way Democrats and Republicans work together on trying to make us all forget about real issues by staging phony ongoing debates that no one ever wins.
WOMEN'S RIGHTS ACTIVIST: I knew something like this was going to happen. This marks the beginning of not only Howard Stern's downfall, but the beginning of the end of senseless reckless macho radio. Even so, I still back freedom of speech and freedom to work for whoever you want. I'm definitely against corporate greed. So I guess I'll back Howard on this one only because he's the little guy in this scenario.
DAVE THE ATTORNEY: There's a lot here to consider. I would say Howard is incorrect that the case has no merit. This lawsuit is about a contractual agreement, nothing more, nothing less. It's not about free speech and it's not about strippers. I suggest that it is going to take a half billion dollars in legal fees for Stern to defend himself. I am available for a free consultation.
