TANGENT SUNSET

COMMON CREEPS by Alex Cosper

What's your opinion on Tom DeLay getting indicted for breaking campaign finance rules? (9/28/05)

respondent quote
GW BULLSH: Well, as far as I know, it's something all politicians are guilty of, but let's let the legal process play out. Then if it's not the desired result, let's change the rules so that Tom is not a victim of a Democratic Party conspiracy.
RECEPTIONIST: Who is Tom DeLay? What show does he play on?
UNKNOWN SKEPTIC: I think the guy is finally getting what he deserves. It's nice to see him temporarily step aside as House Majority Leader while under indictment, but that's not quite good enough for me. The guy is a thug and should get the maximum penalty, even though I find that a couple years in jail is a little soft.
COOL LEE: I don't really know who Tom DeLay is, other than his name keeps coming up in the news. If it's about politics, that explains why I don't know about it, since I always change the channel when they start talking about politics. See, I trust that all politicians are honest people. They're the ones who make the laws, so why would they break their own laws? It just doesn't make any sense.
MR. BIG BIZ: I'm sure Tom will be exonerated of the charges of accepting illegal campaign contributions. What's wrong with big corporations, such as the ones I run, writing big checks to candidates anyway? The end game is to get as many Republicans elected as possible to lower corporate taxes. If the law prohibits this, then the problem is with the law, not the Republicans.
JENNIFER: Another one bites the dust...Corrupt Republicans seem to be going down one by one. He'll probably be convicted and then pardoned by Bush, since they're all part of the same big conspiracy. So the moral of the story is there is no moral. Even so, it's fun to see suckers like that sweat it out for awhile.
COLLEGE STUDENT: Wow, great news! It's good to see that fascism is finally getting a punch in the nose.
REAGAN DEMOCRAT: This is merely a way for the Democrats to temporarily look like they're bringing someone down, while they themselves are collapsing. They couldn't beat DeLay at the polls or on the House floor, so they have to try to smear him in court. Even though I'm against all of DeLay's policies, I like to see cheaters win once in awhile because it keeps the system honest.
