TANGENT SUNSET

How did you remember Elvis on the anniversary of his death? (8/16/05)

respondent quote
RECEPTIONIST: I watched reruns of Happy Days. My favorite Elvis song is "Rock Around the Clock."
CANDY: I started reading a book on Elvis. I was very impressed that Elvis met with President Nixon and totally turned in a list of druggies in the music business. I wonder who the biggest drug addict of that period was.
COOL LEE: I love Elvis because he's still so popular. I do not believe he is dead. I think the real Elvis is in charge of the Elvis-impersonator industry.
DJ YOYO JO-Z: I never get requests for Elvis at my gigs, except for the one techno remix from a few years ago by JXL. You have to understand that most music before 2005 has become outdated.
MR. BIG BIZ: I became an Elvis fan when I learned he was friends with the Nixon administration. I think the real hero of the story, though, was Colonel Parker, who walked away with the goldmine.
JENNIFER: I was never a big Elvis fan. In fact, I kind of think the fifties was the tail-end of the old macho world, whereas the sixties was the beginning of higher awareness.
COLLEGE STUDENT: Elvis is a cultural icon who wrote music history. So it doesn't really matter what my opinion or anyone else's opinion is about him. Saying that, I think a few of his songs, like "Jailhouse Rock," still matter, but for the most part it's just over-marketed nostalgia.
BRUTUS JONES: I shot a bullet in my TV screen in memory of Elvis, because that's what Elvis would have done. Then I went out and ate a stack of cheeseburgers.
JOE DOAKES: Are you kidding? Elvis is like God to me. This past week I've just been listening to lots of Elvis music. "Can't Help Falling in Love" was my wedding song and then "Suspicious Minds" was my divorce song, so the guy obviously has had a huge impact on my life.
