Are we headed for another Great Depression? (4/30/05)

respondent quote
UNKNOWN SKEPTIC: It sure looks like a depression is on the way. I don't know the magnitude it will be - if it will be like Nixon's recession in the seventies or like the Reagan crash in the eighties, but things will probably keep getting worse. Soon unemployment will be so high that the economy will just collapse. I think that's Bush's goal. Then he can just say "well that government didn't work, so let's start a brand new one."
JENNIFER: I think you can just about count on a depression. What Bush has done is that he burned up a bunch of money that he didn't have and now the country is on the verge of bankruptcy. I tried to warn people but they were too busy being brainwashed.
BROKER BOB: We've been going through some volatile weeks recently. Stocks plunged on poor earnings and missed estimates. It seems like corporations are going the honesty route instead of the Enron route of reporting artificially-inflated earnings. It makes you wonder if anything is even worth investing in. I'm beginning to wonder if we might be witnessing the end of the bull market. Well, I was hoping to at least break even but it was still a nice run.
SKULL MADISON: If depression is the recipe for tearing down and starting all over again, let's do it. What we need to do is strip the entire country of its wealth and then redistribute that wealth so that the wealthy get wealthier and the rest are pushed down the economic ladder. I see this happening sooner than later. I believe we are now entering a period that I call "reconstruction of America."
WORKER JOE: Yeah, things are lookin' pretty bad. I gotta feeling I'm gonna be outta work soon. I just can't stand my boss or the hours or the pay. I'd rather work for no one makin' nothing. Except I need cash so I gotta work somewhere. The problem with finding another job is I already work ten hours a day and I don't have time plus there's no other good low paying jobs anyway. I'm already in a deep depression.
COLLEGE STUDENT: I think the best thing any of us can do is prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I wish I knew more about economics but I've spent all my time studying media, which I now realize may have been a big waste of time. I actually think it might be fun to get into real estate but as I said, I don't know which way the market will go or what would be a good investment. It seems like no matter where you put your money, they gotcha.
MADAM OF THE PLANETS: I do not fear a depression. I am more concerned with the bigger picture of what concerns all of us. My concern is one of optimism as well as caution. What I'm talking about is the upcoming restructuring of planet politics and economics. For example, in a few years, we as a planet should consider buying out the rest of the galaxy. If we don't make a claim to owning our own galaxy, we may have to share our galaxy with enemy forces who try to consume our resources.
