TANGENT SUNSET

COMMON CREEPS by Alex Cosper

Do you think House Majority Leader Tom DeLay should resign? (4/19/05)

respondent quote
GW BULLSH: He'd be smart to stay. I think it's up to Tom whether he stays or not. The same is true with all the other people in the Bush administration. We're not gonna let obstructionists try to steal our thunder.
RECEPTIONIST: To be honest, I don't know anything about it - nor do I care. I prefer reality TV shows.
UNKNOWN SKEPTIC: I think Mr. DeLay should step down immediately. You can't go down on record as an active lawmaker and lawbreaker at the same time. Whoops, I forgot. He didn't technically break the law, as if that gets him off the hook ethically.
CANDY: I love 'em. He's the best - whatever he does for a living - that there's ever been. You know how I know that? Because he's a Republican.
COOL LEE: I don't follow politics so I'm gonna pass on this question. I have been following the Michael Jackson trial, though, and that just makes me mad as hell that Michael has to go through all this all over again. They should pass a law that some people should be above the law - and no matter who wrote that law I would vote for that person, even if it were Tom DeLay.
MR. BIG BIZ: I'd like to see the focus move on to other things than minority party disputes. Here we have a booming bull market with incredible amounts of optimistic news, and the liberal media chooses to characterize the times we are living in as some kind of nightmare conspiracy. Leave Mr. DeLay alone. Let him double check his own accounting.
JENNIFER: What we have here is another sad case of government corruption and complete misuse of lobbyist bribes. Why do rich guys still need to spend other people's money? I've heard on Air America that it wasn't necessarily illegal, but it was definitely unethical for DeLay to take those plane trips paid for by lobbyists without notifying the State Department first. As bad as this sounds, it'll probably get buried by the Michael Jackson story.
LEFT GUARD LARRY: His daughter was paid a half million dollaz for somethin,' but I didn't catch the rest o' the story. It kind of put me to sleep. The only time I watch news is after a game. Even then I only catch the first 30 seconds then I get bored as hell so I have to surf until I find another sports channel.
GREY DAVIDSON: Well, as kind of a loser myself, who had to step down once - okay well, I was forced out. Anyway, I know what it's like, Tom. You should do the exact opposite of what I did. In other words, don't wait for this to become a contest to throw you out - just get out while you can still save face.
GURU DION: I think Tom DeLay should definitely resign. Everything about him smells of neo-con disorder. Every move he has made since this story broke has been to his detriment. I don't think his downfall will mark the end of the neo-con regime. I think Bush will find a way to somehow spin the DeLay case in his favor. I wish it weren't the case but that's the way things seem to always work out.
