TANGENT SUNSET

COMMON CREEPS by Alex Cosper

Have you been following the Enron case lately? (12/28/05)

respondent quote
RECEPTIONIST: No way, I lost track of that boring story a long time ago. That's a story for business people. Since I'll never be a business person - as I am completely happy with my low-paying job - I have no interest whatsoever in those kind of stories. Now if they make a movie about it, then I might go see it.
UNKNOWN SKEPTIC: Oops, bad day for the top two guys at Enron. Richard Chausey just agreed to plead guilty in exchange for helping the prosecution nail former Chairman Kenneth Lay and former CEO Jeff Skilling. This is going to be an interesting trial in 2006. It probably won't be as big as Michael Jackson or Martha Stewart, but at least it might scare white collar criminals into cleaning up their act.
CANDY: No, I don't follow Enron or any of those conspiracy theories that are made up by the far left. You have to understand there's a certain percentage of people that hate Corporate America, and they will do whatever it takes to bring down a corporation, especially one that gave a lot of money to the Bush campaign.
COOL LEE: I'm completely unaware of the Enron case other than a company went bankrupt and a lot of employees got laid off. But see, that's part of the game. You just have to expect that at some point. Don't fight the corporate system, just roll with it. And if it rolls over you completely, don't be afraid to start all over again.
MR. BIG BIZ: Well, I would say that the brilliant Sarbanes-Oxley legislation has put to rest any question of financial reporting, so I think it's safe to say that we can put Enron behind us now, and just move on.
JENNIFER: I'm really excited that more of these Enron criminals are getting what they deserve. Keep in mind that Enron was only the beginning of corporate crackdown. There have been several other corrupt corporations to fall since, and you better believe there will be many more. Eventually after all the corporations fall, we will be back to independent businesses running this country, which is what America is supposed to be. Hello?
COLLEGE STUDENT: I'm glad to see that things are getting tougher and tougher for Lay and Skilling. How can they actually think they're going to win this case when the walls keep closing in on them every day? I love seeing corporate criminals go to prison, so I'll be throwing a party in my dorm every day the trial goes on.
DAVE THE ATTORNEY: It was not a good day for Lay and Skilling with Chausey shifting from defense to prosecution. The only edge I see now for Lay and Skilling is if they broaden their defense team. Luckily, I'm available. But if anyone wants a reference first, feel free to contact Skull Madison.
