TANGENT SUNSET

What do you think about Howard Stern being suspended for promoting his upcoming move to satellite radio? (11/7/05)

respondent quote
DJ YOYO JO-Z: All it means is more people will be tunin' in to the hip hop stations, cuz that's the only thing radio got goin' for it anymore. No one wants to hear talk anymore anyway, unless it's in the context of a rap song.
MR. BIG BIZ: I think Stern is problematic, not just for advertisers and the stations which carry his content, but for Stern himself. Here's a guy at the top of his game in radio, yet he is switching to a smaller medium, thus a smaller audience. And now he has been suspended for violating rules concerning self-promotion. This could be that turning point where he may later wish he could have done things a little differently.
JENNIFER: Howard Stern suspended? It figures. All he ever does is shoot off his mouth and treat women like sex objects. He's from the old school and I don't think it matters that he's moving to satellite radio. I think he peaked in popularity about ten years ago and it's been all downhill since. He needs to come up with a better line than "what's your breast size?"
LEFT GUARD LARRY: Howard is cool. I check him out from time to time and that dude tells the best jokes about how women are like...sex objects. I can't believe they would suspend that dude just for talkin' about where he's gonna go next. How are the fans supposed to know what to switch to?
WORKER JOE: Damn, I'm a total Stern fan. We listen every morning at my blue collar job. We called the radio station to find out why Howard wasn't on and they said it wasn't their decision, that it was Howard's syndication company, whatever that means. It sounded like just a weak attempt at trying to dodge complaints. If they don't put Howard back on, I'm never listening to that station again.
COLLEGE STUDENT: Stern should know better than to talk about Sirius on the air while he still works for Viacom. That's just a no-brainer not to shake up waves with potential competitors. Even though I'm the most anti-corporate media person you'll ever meet, even I see Stern as messing up big time for what he did. So I'd say, yeah, the suspension was justified. I'm surprised he wasn't just terminated.
MOVIE BUFF: Oh, I can see this whole thing turning into a movie. I think that's what Howard's trying to do. He's just being dramatic to spice up the story when they do make it a movie. Then he's going to take all his listeners to Sirius then I'll be listening to him on my satellite TV hookup and next thing you know they'll start calling Howard the "king of all new media."
