TANGENT SUNSET

COMMON CREEPS by Alex Cosper

Did any of the speeches at the Democratic Convention move you? (7/30/04)

respondent quote
UNKNOWN SKEPTIC (D): Well, I'm confused. If I want to end the war completely which candidate do I vote for? I give up.
COOL LEE (D): Obama did a good job, but he needs to change his name, because he's one letter away from ending up on the wrong list.
JOE DOAKES (D): I liked Howard Dean, but he should not have opened with a joke about how he wished he had been the nominee. Everyone knows he flopped, so he needs to bury the idea of ever running for office again. He needs to think about doing a game show on TV, or something that overshadows his embarrassing defeat.
GREY DAVIDSON (D): I liked the way Kerry is starting to use hand gestures. He's definitely not as stiff as he was a few months ago. He's got a long ways to go before he completely shakes his wooden image, but then again, I'm a long ways off myself.
DJ YOYO JO-Z (D): The Kerry speech was long and lame. It had no spark or wit. It was just a contrived rollout of the teleprompter. If he wants to learn some secrets about talking to a crowd, he should come to my dance one of these Friday nights. The crowd listens to me, because I merge with their spirit. It ain't no cue-card presentation by some scarecrow in a suit. It's the real thing.
REAGAN DEMOCRAT (D): I liked Ron Reagan's speech on stem cell research. I particularly liked the way he didn't endorse anyone, how he kept politics out of it. All he said was this November vote yes for stem cell research. The way he didn't mention Kerry kind of makes you wonder if he's really a Republican.
MR. BIG BIZ (R): I thought it all was a very weak presentation by all of the speakers. I think the Democrats are scrambling because they can't come up with a better plan than the Bush tax cuts, which are starting to turn the economy around.
BROKER BOB (R): We've heard all this talk from pollsters that Democrats always get a big bounce in the polls after the convention. I doubt it this time. I think they'll even drop ten points after such a ho-hum presentation.
SKULL MADISON (R): So Kerry wants to play war hero, huh? It's not gonna work. The American people are not that stupid. Kerry was a war critic and was part of the disruption that brought down Nixon, one of our greatest presidents. No, I give no quarter to that jigsaw rhetoric. Nothing at that convention fooled me. I'm for Bush all the way.
BRUTUS JONES (R): Kerry's trying to act soft on guns, posing as a hunter. I know how these liberal Democrats really are. They fool you into thinking they believe in the Constitution and then they turn around and act like cops and try to take away everyone's gun. Until he talks about supporting concealed weapon laws, my vote is for Bush.
BOUNCER MIKE (R): I thought none of the Democrats had anything worthy to say. It was just all the same dream talk about change that's never gonna happen. Bush will win by a landslide, wait and see.
GOOFBALL GREG (R): Doesn't it show how dumb the Democrats are if they have to have a convention when they've already known who the nominee was for several months? What a waste of time and money. They need to watch the Republicans and learn how it's done.
