TANGENT SUNSET

COMMON CREEPS by Alex Cosper

What's your opinion on all the religious imagery in the media lately? (4/2/04)

respondent quote
MR. BIG BIZ: More power to the media. Faith is the basis of economic prosperity. It gets people feeling good about themselves and earning money. It fuels the economy and President Bush understands this. He has been right on the money when it comes to issues such as prayer in school and gay marriage. The reason religion is making a comeback in the media is mainly due to who is in the White House. Bush has set a tone for economic optimism in conjunction with reassurance of faith. That's the beauty of capitalism. It's grounded in Christian morals, which mixed with the concept that greed is good makes an incredibly winning combination.
JENNIFER: If you're talking about that Jesus movie, I already saw The Last Temptation or whatever so I don't need to see the same story twice. That's just Hollywood trying to make a buck off the same old stories. I do hear more about religion in the news lately, treated as if it were news. I myself have my own spiritualism so I don't subscribe to any of the popular religions that are constantly bickering with each other.
SKULL MADISON: Religion is essential for Democracy. It is indeed the foundation of cultural divisions. We became a free country because we fought for it. I fought for the Confederacy then I changed sides - and then back again but that's beside the point. The point is this: we need media reinforcement of religion to keep the jealous god complex going as assurance there will be wars.
WORKER JOE: Man, I haven't noticed it. I watch a lot of sports, that's my religion. On Sunday I don't go to church, I watch the games. In a way sports are like two religions going up against each other. The strongest side wins. It's not about brains or who has the biggest heart, it's about who can kick butt. In the end the scoreboard is the real God. I make a lot of money off games when God is nice to me.
FATHER SULLIVAN: It's a sign that the word of the apostles is the word of God. It's written in the scriptures. All these years we've been waiting for the messiah and He is coming soon. We must pray for salvation. We must support President Bush, for he is our leader who is guided by the Lord. We must set partisan politics aside and follow He who is destined for eternity. The final countdown to Armageddon has arrived and we must be prepared for Judgment Day.
SINGER BOY GIRL: A lot of this religious nonsense turns me off. How can anyone believe in a book that was written by people who thought the world was flat? This isn't the Roman Empire, so let's quit acting like we need religion to knock down another religion. This country is run by mad homophobic sickos who try to push religion only because it keeps the people dumb. As long as the people are dumb, they can take away all of our rights and treat us like sexless slaves.
COLLEGE STUDENT: I'm not sure what to think of it right now. On one hand, I want to believe in a God but I also want to understand science and history. Sometimes science and history contradict religion so it's hard to sort it out. Like in one of my history classes I learned that The Bible was written over several centuries and wars. As it turned out, whoever happened to win a particular war got to decide what would be included in The Bible. Sometimes, like in England, the national religion would change depending on who was king or queen. Some of the writers and translators of The Bible went to jail or were executed depending on what the royal family thought of their work. I think that's the part of religion that needs to be talked about more in the media.
BRUTUS JONES: I don't talk about my religion because it's no one's business what I think. I support all religions except the ones that come knockin' on my door. I don't need anyone preaching to me about their interpretation of religion. My main concern is that no one takes away my right to own a gun. It even says in The Bible everyone has a right to own a gun. My God isn't afraid of my gun, so tell all these weak crybabies to get a gun and a life.
MADAM OF THE PLANETS: I think it has a lot to do with astrology and UFOs. We are moving into a spiritual cycle where several planets are visible from Earth. This happens but once in a blue moon. I really think something is going to change real soon but I can't tell what it is. I know it involves Aries. I think the secrets of the universe are about to be exposed. This is going to be a very exciting time for some and a very challenging time for others. That's all I can say for now.
SKULL MADISON: I'm sorry, I had to get in here twice to make sure my point is clear. Religion is a cultural phenomenon, true. But more importantly, it is a tool of governments to create unity. That's why they say religion is the root of all wars. I support religious indoctrination to the point of social manipulation within cultural boundaries as long as the end game is war.

THESE TALK RADIO HOSTS ARE ALL SAYING THE SAME THING:

they all support making religion part of the law
